Alferis words Essay Example Alferis words Paper Alferis words Paper Eddie feels he is compelled to ring the migration agency and this in light of desire. His envy developed as Catherine turned out to be increasingly autonomous and experienced. He understood she was evading his grip and aversions it.Eddies own words were, You can faster get back a million dollars that was took than a word you gave away. Eddie sold out his own convictions, and lost the regard of the entire network and his respect as a result of envy Eddie, who overlooked Alferis expressions of caution, You wont have a companion on the planet, Eddie! Indeed, even the individuals who comprehend will betray you, And this due to the defense and envy he didnt need to watch Catherine marrying. Alfieri is one of the characters that knows about Eddies thought processes behind his activities. Eddie visits Alfieri twice during the play once toward the finish of act one when Eddie is starting to see that Catherine is infatuated with Rodolpho and Eddies desire is starting to peak and furthermore toward the start of act two when Eddies has had enough and his heart advises him to do an inappropriate thing. Eddie you intend to disclose to me that theres no law that a person which he aint right can go to work and wed a young lady and ? Eddie is addressing Alfieri and you see that Eddies desire is more prominent than any time in recent memory. Hes revealing to Alfieri that Rodolpho aint right inferring that hes gay. Eddie is attempting to discover whatever will have the option to stop the marriage between his Catherine and Rodolpho. Alfieri knows about why Eddie is visiting him. Alfieri sees that his adoration for his niece is more prominent than his affection for his significant other and Eddies desire for Rodolpho has constrained Eddie to visit Alfieri to discover a law that would stop the marriage. Alfieri But, Eddie, shes a lady now Eddie Hes taking from me! Alfieri She needs to get hitched, Eddie. She cannot wed you, can she? Alfieri sees that Eddie takes a gander at Catherine as something other than a niece. Eddie says Hes taking from me inferring that Catherine is his yet Alfieri then says thatâ she cant wed you, can she so here you realize that Alfieri knows about Eddies love for his niece and he sees that at some point or another Eddie would accomplish something inept as a result of his affection and envy towards Catherine and Rodolphos relationship. In Eddies second visit to Alfieri Eddie attempts to burrow further to discover something that would stop the marriage. Alfieris final words to Eddie were. Alfieri When the law isn't right this is on the grounds that its unnatural, yet for this situation it is common and a stream will suffocate you on the off chance that you buck it now. Release her. Furthermore, favor her.Somebody needed to desire her Eddie at some point or another. You wont have a companion on the planet, Eddie ! Indeed, even the individuals who comprehend will betray you, even the ones who feel a similar will in spite of you! Alfieri sees what Eddie is going to resort as well and by saying you wont have a companion on the planet hes attempting to worn him off ringing the movement agency however Eddies love for his niece advises him to do an inappropriate thing. Beatrice was likewise one of the characters that knew about his actual sentiments behind his intentions yet she gave the impression of being frightened to state anything. Beatrice is viewed as a shy individual and wouldnt face Eddie as he overwhelms her choices and in a manner alarms her. Beatrice leaves the circumstance in the first place yet as Eddie continues to be overprotective and starts meddling with Catherine and Rodolphos relationship she attempts to make Catherine mindful of Eddies intentions behind his activities. We see a long duologue among Eddie and Beatrice that causes us to understand that Beatrice knows about Eddies thought processes when Eddie becomes unsettled when Catherine is out, When he aint working. He aint expected to go promoting himself. We know Catherine and Rodolpo have been dating for about fourteen days and are at the photos when the scene opens. It is clear Eddies concern has developed; he imagines he is stressed for Rodolphos security, despite the fact that it is evident he is just getting unsettled at the idea of them being together out of his sight. Beatrice detects his doubt and jealousy, (Smiling) Ah, go on, youre just jealous. However, she protects her sentiments by introducing her considerations nearly as a joke and disregarding the reality she sees that Eddie cherishes Catherine really. She trys to make Catherine mindful of his affections for her yet Catherine is na㠯⠿â ½ve and baffled by what Beatrice is attempting to tell her. But on the off chance that you demonstration like an infant damnation b treatin you like a child. Like when he gets back home once in a while you give yourself wholeheartedly to him like when you was twelve years old Beatrice is attempting to disclose to Catherine that shes acting coquettish round him and shes doing an inappropriate thing seen just as shes about a developed lady. Beatrice Sit down nectar, I wanna reveal to you something. Here plunk down. Was there ever any fella he enjoyed for you? There wasnt was there? Catherine But he says Rodolpho soon after his papers Beatrice Hell state anything. What does he care what he says? On the off chance that it was a sovereign came here for you it would be the same. You realize that dont you Beatrice is nuance attempting to disclose to her that Eddie doesnt need to free her and his desire wont release her. Likewise by saying in the event that it was a ruler that came here for you it would be the same shes attempting to disclose to Catherine that he has a fascination for her and that there will never take care of business sufficient for his Catherine. Catherine is Eddie Madonna meaning he venerates her and adores her. In his eyes he cannot release her however Catherine cannot comprehend why. Eddies desire at that point detrimentally affects Beatrice and Eddies relationship. Eddies love for his niece Catherine meddles with their relationship. Beatrice feels as if she is second best to her own niece. Swirls envy has assumed control over their marriage. When am I going to be a spouse again? I aint been feeling better. They trouble me since they came In her edgy hunt to be acknowledged she even accuses herself. From the beginning we perceived how Eddie was responsible for the relationship, however now Beatrice is enraged by his absence of attention Eddie I need you to remove it, at the present time, you hear me. In Beatrices disappointment she has confronted him. The obtrusive denouncing just baffles and confounds Eddies musings, and it turns out to be clear their relationship is beginning to separate. This is simply from Eddies outrage and envy toward Catherine and Rodolpho, not exclusively is his marriage breaking separated however his relationship with Catherine is as well. Eddie utilizes the reason to conceal the reality he has more love for Catherine than Beatrice and Beatrice feels as if its driving them further separated and is tired of not being cherished due to Eddies jealousy. Irony is a significant part to the play A View from the Bridge and furthermore makes Eddies envy noticeable. When Eddie cautions Catherine and Beatrice that they should never talk about the submarine it is a solid case of prophetic incongruity since it prognosticates how Eddie will make his significant blunder in judgment when he sells out Marco and Rodolpho alongside the Lipari Cousins. Whirlpools embarrassed and freely charged by Marco. Simply recollect kid you can faster get back a million dollars that was took than a word you gave away This is the admonition Eddie provided for Beatrice and Catherine informing them also anything concerning Rodolpho and Marco to anybody yet at long last it was Eddie who conflicted with his own words. Alfieri was someone else who likewise cautioned Eddie from doing an inappropriate thingâ you wont have a companion on the planet Eddie But Eddie still doesnt tune in to his notice and at long last transforms into catastrophe in Eddies passing. In a view from the extension Eddie acknowledges when its past the point of no return and hes kicking the bucket that Beatrice love him and he cherishes Beatrice. He understands that it was difficult to keep Catherine as he had attempted and it was inescapable that one day he would need to let her go. Eddies mystery want for Catherine is additionally fused to his greatest advantage since everything he could consider was himself and he didnt take a gander at how upbeat Catherine and Rodolpho were, all he thought about was envy an attempting to split them up by calling the migration agency yet this caused was Catherine and himself to become separated and for Catherine to at long last observe what kind of a man he truly was. Eddie desire prompts the gigantic disaster toward the end. Rather than setting his sentiments aside for Catherine he left them develop until his upheaval of envy transformed into catastrophe and at long last he understands what a horrible misstep he has made.

Getting Through a Difficult Month

Getting Through a Difficult Month March was the busiest month at MIT so far. It truly felt like it was never going to end. It seemed like all my midterms were clustering on the same week, and in some cases the same day, and I felt overwhelmed beyond belief. Now, as Spring Break comes to close, and the month of April has arrived, I feel ready for the next two months of school before the summer break. So, with second semester in full swing, I had about 5 midterms in March, a presentation that accounted for 30% of my grade, and what felt like the largest amount of homework in existence. My classes have split into two categories, and the amount I spend on each category is extremely different. For me, I spend the mass majority of my time on my Physics and Real Analysis class. Both of them are extremely interesting to me, but they are my most challenging to courses at the same time. Last week, I had my first analysis midterm. Coming into the class, I heard some pretty sad stories about midterm averages, so I was definitely concerned about taking the test after learning a very large bulk of the material that was all fair game to be tested on. Luckily, that week prior and weekend, I spent a large portion of my time studying and asking questions in office hours that made me go into the exam with a lot more confidence than I thought I would have. That Real Analysis exam really changed the way I viewed tests and the way I felt before exams in the preparation period. Sure, I had felt a little anxious before an exam before as just about anyone does, but for the first time, I truly was scared I was going to royally mess something up on the day of the test. I thought I was going to forget a technique, or I was going to panic and not be able to produce some counterexample that when I was studying haunted me! I really for the first time was pushing myself to spend countless hours studying for a test that truth be told, I haven’t necessarily had to do before. In the end, the month was stressful because of time. Sure, if I only had to deal with Real Analysis, which feels like 48 units of class sometimes, it would be a lot more manageable, but I have four other classes in reality. The biggest life lesson that I took out of this month is time management when things started popping out that aren’t part of your schedule. In my last few posts, I have shown my schedule and talked about managing full plates, but the office hours, independent time devoted to studying, that is really at the student’s discretion. There were a lot of time where I wanted to stop doing some of my schoolwork to watch The Office or bike, but I had to plan accordingly, so I could do as good as possible on my exams and make sure I was learning material. It is, in the big picture to me, a tradeoff. In comparison to last semester, I am learning more, I feel much more motivated, and feel like I’m improving as a person both in and out of the classroom. At the same time, I have less “free-time”, but I made up for a lot of the busy time during this extremely rewarding Spring Break. Like, right now, my family is here, and we have been all over Boston these past few days! I got to try all new restaurants, explore all new sites that were less than a mile from campus which attests to the fact that there is literally so much that can be done in terms of this city, and got to have a much-needed week off from the hustle and bustle of classes, research, and tutoring. I have a good feeling about April, and all my weekends coming up have something exciting in them! CPW is in two weeks. I can’t wait to see all the incoming students and experience the crazy weekend not as a pre-frosh this time. Well, all that in the upcoming weeks. For now, I have to play an April Fool’s Joke on someone :) Post Tagged #18.100 Real Analysis #8.02 Physics II: Electricity and Magnetism

The Role of Gods Essay

Ancient Greeks live by the fate of their lives. This was dictated by the presences of a super natural being who was fearful and no one could attempt to question his unforeseen powers. The gods were believed to be part of people’s lives and nobody could imagine doing something without first consulting with the immortal world. The gods were omnipresent and Homer described them as ‘anthropomorphic’ that is they are like human in characteristics and all activities carried out during those days were literally controlled by the gods, this depicts their interaction with the mortals. Although, the presences of the Greek gods were associated with nature, they generally appeared in various forms like lightening and thunder, fire, water and other physical features (Homer 492). Firstly, while they were considered the mighty, sometimes they could turn against their subject and spell disaster in the community. This was seen as the bad side of gods but this could only happened when they were angered or when they were predicting what to come in future. Homer further stated that the gods kept on alternating between spirit world and mortal world (Aristophanes 704). Gods have different roles and duties in the society and they have been given names according to their roles. We have the god of rain, wealth, animals and even for the rulers. The god of life â€Å"Athena’ is the most respected and adored as he his giver and protector without which all mortals will be extinct. This is seen when the mortals always pray and asked them to give them more lives and to protect them against any misfortune. Because of their supreme nature they are always respected and mortals offer them sacrifices to appease them. This constant interaction keeps the two worlds a kind of mutual understanding as they depend upon each other (Homer 322). The mortals mainly the rulers and king value gods as they guide them on how to rule and what they should do in order to excel for many years without their authority being questioned by the people. They are always requested for victory when they are going for wars. In addition, people on the other hand seek the gods’ powers when they are preparing the lands for cultivation. They request that they be granted rain, and favorable weather conditions so that their crops will do well. In times of drought, hunger, plagues and other natural calamities the Greeks always go up the mountain to pray and ask god for forgiveness. This shows the close interaction between the supreme gods and the mortals (Homer 324) In relation to Greeks tradition, we realize that the gods played an important role in the society. They were of great help especially when it comes to human activities. There was nothing being done before seeking the hand of god. Religion was highly valued and everyone was to respect the supernatural being because it was everywhere and was the sole provider of everything. All this were based on traditional myths and norms (Aristophanes 683). Since all the goddesses or gods interacted together, there was need to offer sacrifices to all of the m at specific times failure to which they could cause havoc in the society. The god of war for example was to be consulted first before dispatching the warriors so as to bless and cover them from spirit of death. The Greek also believed that when one dies it was the role of the gods to accept and guide its spirit to a safe place in the immortal world so that it does not come back to haunt the living. Consequently, the gods were also helpful in predicting the future. The kings and rulers always visited the gods and consult them on what lies ahead. By so doing the kings would prepare accordingly and even if there is need to relocate they would do that in advance (Sophocles 659). Despite the benefits of gods to ancient Greeks, there are some few harmful effects which they cause. An example is when the gods are angry they can bring serious droughts or other calamities which might not go well with the people. When they don’t receive sacrifices as per their specification they cause deaths and deformities in children (Aristophanes 722). The gods appeared in different forms and shapes; this was in respect to the roles played by each goddess. The goddess of rain would appear in form of thunder and lightning and in most cases it appeared as moving clouds and for one to receive the message he was suppose to go up the mountains where the clouds was passing and perform some rituals bef ore the god convey the massage (Homer 437). In conclusion, it is evident that the gods of war appeared as wild wind and it could lead and direct the warriors all the way to the battle field. Since many gods manifested themselves in human forms, they did most of their works as kings and commanders. Some people were known to having extra ordinary powers and skills that no one new exactly their origin. This was a special case of gods performing human duties in immortal world (Homer 441). The religion and tradition benefited a lot because of the presence of gods so as to restore order and unity among the members of the community thus reducing instances of conflicts as people feared the consequences of disobeying the gods. In some situations the gods appeared as feathered serpent and under this condition it was only through the intervention of the foreseers to interpret the message they were carrying (Aristophanes 718). Racism, Bias And Prejudice - 921 Words

Throughout history, many immigrants have been subject to racism, bias and prejudice. This unfair treatment is usually the result of people that aren’t accustomed to change and rather than accepting it, they rebel by unnecessarily making derogatory remarks and sometimes even physical harm. African Americans dealt with it for years in the United States and unfortunately, in some areas, it still exists. Indians that had been governed by the British Empire were no excuse to these hateful acts. She stressed vegetarianism and was also known for fasting for days, almost to the point of starvation. For example, the market segment that consisted of business executives required greater user-friendliness while the market segment that consisted of professional graphics designers required a greater range of functionalities. Therefore, the management team at Aldus had to formulate strategies that would enable the existing organizational structure at Aldus to customize PageMaker to a greater extent to the needs of both segments. Although the proposed reorganization presented several difficult challenges, it was a viable one in light of the fact that both consumer segments were critical to maintaining Aldus’s profit potential. A Monster or Misunderstood free essay sample

When was the last time you asked someone to check for a creature living under your bed? To a 5 year old, this is a true monster. Do you remember the infuriating feeling you felt upon hearing about a terrorist’s appalling crimes? Some might call a terrorist, a real monster. Who knows what truly a monster is? In the end we tend to follow the statement â€Å"to each, his own†. We all have our own opinions based on our own maturity, values, ideas, and worldly experience. Each connotation of the word â€Å"monster† however, traces back to the same basic principles that are acknowledged by the masses. The dictionary, combining the separate meanings of the word into one accepted and referred to, states that a monster is any human or animal so grotesquely deviating from normal shape, behavior or character or a person who excites horror by wickedness or cruelty. In today’s society, the average person and the majority of the population’s way of thinking would find the creature to be the real monster of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. The evidence and support shows that the creature fits the definition of monster on all literal and objective levels. Throughout the book, the creature is portrayed as an unbearably gruesome fiend, and the author never lets us forget its horror, always stressing on its physical defects. The argument that gruesome is a subjective term cannot be put across because every person to pick up the book is revolted by its description. his yellow skin barely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriance’s only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes that seemed almost the same color as the dun white sockets in which they were set, his shriveled complexion, his straight black lips† was the way in which Mary Shelly first introduced us to the creature with imagery. Even its birth story, how it was made, is nauseating in itself. Victor Frankenstein was an ambitious, intelligent, driven young scientist that had both personal and academic push to find a way to create life. Experiment with the bodies of small animals, he then moved on to humans. In the middle of the night he stole and studied bodies from the graveyard, bodies with worms in the brain, falling apart with an unworldly wretched smell all their own. And from these bodies did he take separate body parts and place them together in a superhuman body, sown together, connected, to make one incredible being. The body, dead, covered, at the wee hours of the morning, a violent storm still brewing outside with the candlelight burning low, was brought to life with the deadly bolt of lightening, shocking it, a force sent throughout its body. When created, the images of it given to us by the literary technique of characterization. â€Å"I beheld the wretch, the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the bed, and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaw opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks. He might have spoken, but I did not hear, one hand was stretched out, seeming to detain me†. With the previous mood set of the book, the situation and the circumstances that were previously described, this scene itself can sent a bolt of fear down the readers body erupting in shivers all the way down. Without a single word being said or true atrocious action committed, the creature has awakened an indescribable fear in Frankenstein, and even the reader. That is truly monstrous. Not only was he physically flawed, but the deeds he committed, whatever the reasons be, in the first few months and years of his life, are sick. They are inhuman; they flare up anger in the reader, a sense of deep injustice. It outmatches the slight feelings of sympathy we may feel for the creature when it is denied by society. After being hurt by the kind cottagers, who themselves, despite being the benevolent, kind headedly ardent people they were, still judged him by his monstrosity. Even the best of society, could not overlook his incredibly painful countenance. He went off, and he killed a young innocent boy, one full of life, with no biased on the world, just childish thoughts, that was related to the creatures creator, Frankenstein, which proved to be his demise. â€Å"The child still struggled, and loaded me with epithets which carried despair to my heart. I grasped his throat to silence him, and in a moment he lay dead at my feet†. It only takes a truly disgusting human being to kill another so pure and innocent. His feelings of hate, suffering, and sense of revenge were so great, he set off to kill all that Frankenstein held dear in the world, his reason and purpose for survival. Elizabeth, my love, my wife, so lately living, so dear, so worthy†¦but the deathly languor and coldness of the limbs told me†¦the murderous mark of the fiends grasp was on her neck, and the breathing had ceased to issue from her lips. † The author used romanticism, after showing us just how much he truly loved Elizabeth, the feelings of self sacrifice he would have committed for her, and how unworthy of death, how great a being she was, she shows us, it was indeed the creature that took her life. And that also, on her wedding night. This is what all would consider a truly grotesque deed, unfair, unjustified, hateful in every way. The negative connotation oozes off of it, with pain suffering and despair. The creature, with the five yr old’s monsters physical horror, and the terrorist’s crimes against society, and horrible characteristics make-up with all negative flaws, faults, and personality. His character as a whole, screams out monster, his liabilities were too great, and too many. No forgiveness could be spent on a creature, that’s entire being was against everything we have ever learned was right from the moment we were put on this earth.

aromatherapy essays

aromatherapy essays Darwin (1859, cited in Gross, 1988) in his book on the Origin of Species (1859) stated species evolved through the process of natural selection in which only the fittest survive. This implies selfish behaviour. However, some species do show altruism (e.g., rabbits banging on the ground to alert others of danger). Altruism has been defined as helping someone in need with no expectation of receiving something in return. Humans also show altruism but psychologists have questioned is it truly selflessness that motivates us to help others or do we receive some reward in return. The exchange theory (1959, cited in Deaux and Wrightsman, 1980) states people display altruistic behaviour to feel good or gain social approval. This theory also states the higher the rewards the more likely altruistic behaviour will be engaged in. Rewards can be either intrinsic such as praise or extrinsic such as self-satisfaction. Many factors have been studied to see if they affect whether or not we display more or less altruistic behaviour. Such factors include gender of person requiring the help and of the person offering it, type of situation, age, race and physical conditions (such as type of weather or area request for help is asked, busy or quiet). In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. The majority of students who got in had high school GPAs of B- or higher, SAT scores (RWM) of 1000 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 20 or higher. Higher numbers clearly improve your chances. Youll notice a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) hidden behind the blue and green of the graph. Some students with grades and standardized test scores on target for Kansas did not get in. On the flip side, a handful of students were accepted with test scores and grades a bit below the norm. This is because the University of Kansas admissions process is not entirely quantitative. Grades, test scores and class rank play the largest role in the process, but Kansas is looking for students who have completed a challenging college preparatory curriculum, not just students with good grades. Leadership styles are employed by managers to suit the needs of the people and the organization that is being led. It is almost always a mix of the six leadership styles: visionary, coaching, affiliative, democratic, pace-setting and commanding, that today’s leaders practice in successfully leading their teams. These styles are adopted by the leader either individually or as a mix of more than one style, within the context of the people and organizational needs at that moment. Educator Role Strategic Plan Presentation Research Paper

Educator Role Strategic Plan Presentation - Research Paper Example There are two basic reasons to this, firstly the healthcare has gone phenomenal advancements and secondly the public awareness on the issue of health and safety had never been so vivid like we experience it today. However, the basics criterion to meet these challenges has not changed much and that it requires your whole hearted commitment to the profession even today. Being an educator, you are required to enable and enrich others through your contribution and personal example and develop and prepare them for the challenges of the nursing profession. To be a good educator you first need to be good learner and should have the capacity to correct and develop skills of the trade instantly and for this you have to have some personal qualities. Therefore, to assess the personal capabilities and tendencies it is important to have a self criticism before choosing yourself as a right candidate for the nursing educator role. This self assessment and knowledge of personal guts and shortcomings is vitally important for a strategic plan of next few years so that you can realistically set your future goals. I had started my professional career some fifteen years ago as an associate nurse in a local hospital. Throughout my professional career I found myself quite comfortable with the demands and routines of the trade. Perhaps all these things have now become a second nature for me and I enjoy my job as nursing supervisor. This long experience in the field of nursing has give birth to many personal qualities and have additionally polished my thrust for knowledge. As a nurse you have to adopt several roles during your career and none of those role can be performed without profound knowledge and expertise of the field. My career has grown me into a nurse of solid clinical background and I have been performing my duties to the highest satisfaction of my seniors. So I find it quite soothing that my love for knowledge and professional competence can support me in my future goal ac hievements. But this comes with responsibilities and I found myself compelled to enhance my educational competence. Another important skill that my profession has inculcated into my personality is to learn and share in team environments. This has brought me multifaceted benefits as a learner as well as a trainer. I have been working many a times in such capacities where I had to train my junior colleagues and have found myself quite comfortable with the job. Teaching has been an enjoyable experience for me. It had not only imparted knowledge to me but has also given me confidence to adopt it as my professional career. The communication skills are indispensible for any such role in my future and though there it had been quite easy going for me while communicating and sharing knowledge with others I have identified few gray areas as well where I have to address certain issues with my communications skills. Additionally, my inability to avoid debates in certain environments may cause s erious problem in the attainment of my strategic targets. It is always advisable to get rid of unhealthy discussions; discussion just for the sake of discussion. Secondly, more often than not I find it very difficult to resist sleep. This obviously, I am talking about the extra bit of laziness while having completed a healthy sleep

Godlessness And Ethics God Is Dead Philosophy Essay

Godlessness And Ethics God Is Dead Philosophy Essay Simon Blackburns Ethics, A Very Short Introduction identifies seven threats to the field of philosophical inquiry know as Ethics. First among these threats is the death of God. What is meant by this term is that for a considerable portion of human history, the question of what was considered ethical or moral was answered by turning to religious scripture. It follows then, that for those who turn to God or the gods for answers to dilemmas of an ethical nature, the death of such an entity would present a most vexing problem. Without this divine keystone, the entire arch of their morality would crumble under the compounding pressures of everyday life. But not for Blackburn, and certainly not for me. As it was mentioned previously, Blackburn placed the death of God as the first of seven threats to ethics. But to read beyond what a moron in a hurry would interpret as his true meaning reveals that the death of god was placed as the first threat to underscore the argument he makes that while superficially, godlessness may be seen as undermining ethics, in actuality it does much to act as a catalyst for a new beginning in the field of ethics. Blackburn sees the death of god as a positive thing, buttressing his claim by saying that Plato tells us that the ethical laws cannot be arbitrary whims of personalized gods. Â  Maybe instead we can make our own laws (Blackburn 16). Â   Blackburn proposes that humanity would be better served making our own ethics rather than following the booming edicts of a capricious, anthropomorphized, invisible sky-daddy. Thusly, it follows that Gods death is in fact cause for celebration and represents a false threat to ethical inquiry. However, this cele bration may have to be postponed, for if Gods death is the false threat, what then is the real one? The real threat that ethics face from this front is not Shivas wrath, Zeuss lightning or Yahwehs Judgment. Rather it comes from those who believe in the reality of the aforementioned. It was Voltaire who said it best, when he wrote that those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities. This threat, the threat religion poses to not only ethics, but humanity as a whole, is best defeated by claiming and defending the assertion that atheism offers a human basis of ethics and morality with greater potential to satisfy those who it was designed to serve, namely us. This position is not without precedent, and it was Socrates who first applied logic to the religious convictions of his fellow Greeks (particularly the ethical conviction that morals must be followed because it is what the religious figure commands) and showed them to be not only conceptually confused but built on a shifting foundation. While avoiding his fate, his footsteps are ones that many have followed. I would like to mention at this point that I am not merely making use of God of popular, modern, Western Judeo-Christian tradition (Though any religious references will most likely be to this conception of God, as it is most familiar to both author and audience). Rather, I mean to say that moral atheism offers a superior alternative to (among countless others) Jesus, Anubis, Baal, Izanami, Zeus, Vishnu, and Quetzalcoatl. As mentioned previously by Socrates, the rejection of divine command lies at the heart of moral atheism. Here I argue that following a command to behave ethically is not in itself ethical behavior, but rather obedience that results in a pantomime of true ethical behavior. Secular humanism in turn, offers a morality that is thought out, argued and reasoned. By having a moral basis in secular humanism, atheism possesses a distinct advantage. Â  This is because, this ethical base, standing as it is, outside whatever religion it happens to find itself near, can look at what is being commanded by divine authority in a way that allows it to more easily evaluate the command itself. This superiority then allows atheists the ability to look at the command, say perhaps, the arbitrary violence of Ezekiel 9:4-7 where the God of that religion commands his (as George Carlin once said, God must be a man, no woman could or would ever screw things up so badly) followers: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city. Once the command is looked at, presumably with horror, it is the moral atheist who is more inclined to reject the actions as unethical because they have already been able to find the command immoral. I would like to draw to a close by offering a quick concession to the theists out there. Many of the worlds religions hold out the promise of redemption, the hope that if a human being has violated morality in such a way that no amends are possible, many of the worlds gods have the ability of mercy or forgiveness (often conflated, they are similar put not the same). This is something that atheism does not afford. The logical consequence of this is that an individual is forced to make choices with the knowledge that each and every single one of those choices is adding up to the only value they can ever hope to have in their life. To write this, does not, as the theist may assume, fill the author with a sense of crushing insignificance and nihilism. Rather, it is a great feeling of importance, the weight of each choice is not that of a burden. It is finding the human condition from the moral atheist position to be one were decency, morality and ethics arise without the expectation of p unishment or rewards. With one life to live, what choice do we as a species have but accept that and exult in it. God is dead. Long live us.

Analysis of The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher In The Rye Essay Throughout the book, The Catcher In the Rye, the theme that I saw reoccurring in the novel was the painfulness of growing up. In the book there are many cases of Holden Caulfield trying to resist growing. He does not want to grow up because he’s afraid of the unknown, or what’s coming next in his life. In fact his main goal is to resist maturing. He is scared of the unknown and cannot handle things that are very complicated. He likes it when things are very simple and easily understandable. In the book there are many examples of the theme of the painfulness of growing up in the book. â€Å"I went down by a different staircase, and I saw another â€Å"Fuck you† on the wall. I tried to rub it off with my hand again, but this one was scratched on, with a knife or something. It wouldn’t come off. Its hopeless, anyway. If you had a million years to do it in, you couldn’t rub out even half the â€Å"Fuck you† signs in t he world. Its impossible. † (Salinger 201). This quote shows that Holden wants to protect kids.He is mad that he is not able to stop the kids from getting their innocence taken away. He is also mad because he knows that it is impossible to keep from kids getting their innocence taken away. â€Å"What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if theyre running and they don’t look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all id do all day. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all†(Salinger 98). This shows that Holden wants to save him and other people from growing up one day.Holden is scared of growing up, and also scared of the unknown. He feels like he has a duty to save other people from growing up and maturing. â€Å"Mothers are all slightly insane†(Salinger 176), this shows Holdens belief that all adults are in one way or another phony. This is why he is scared to grow up . He does not want to grow up and become phony like all the adults. The quote also shows his viepoint on all adults. He believes that once you mature you are phony, and he does his best to make sure that he does not become phony. As you can see the theme of the painfulness of growing up is very prevalent throughout The Catcher In The Rye. Holden is very afraid of growing up and is also afraid of the unknown. He also feels that it is his duty to protect others and himself from growing up. Holden believes that every adult is phony and his goal to keep everyone from growing up and becoming phony. The theme of the painfulness of growing up is very important in the book.
